I’ve finally gotten around to booking something concrete for September, a couple of mates & I will by slumming it across South Eastern Europe! I can’t wait as it’s been almost a year since I last had a holiday – which is quite a long time for me. I’ll certainly need it after I complete my Masters degree at the end of August. Th the moment the only thing booked is the flights, Manchester to Split in Croatia the last week in September, then back to Manchester from Budapest in Hungary three weeks later.
So far the basic plan is to head south along the Croatian coast from Split to Dubrovnik, then turn inland and into Bosnia to see Mostar and Sarajevo before continuing on to Belgrade in Serbia. From there are a couple of overnight trains first to Sofia in Bulgaria, then on to Istanbul in Turkey a few days later. From Istanbul we turn back North passing through Bulgaria and into Romania for a stop at Bucharest, then onward into the Carpathian Mountains and Transylvania. From there we cross the border into Hungary and our final stop, Budapest. We’ll be travelling entirely overland using trains and buses, which I always prefer over flying between stops.
Hopefully it’ll live up to expectation and be an amazing trip. I’ve wanted to visit Istanbul for a long time, and I’m intrigued as to what Bosnia and Serbia have to offer!
